Why am I running?

I believe that a strong education system is the foundation for a thriving community. As an educator, licensed mental health professional, first-generation high school and college graduate and a former English as a second language learner student and current community leader, I bring a unique perspective to the table. I understand the challenges our schools face and am committed to working collaboratively to find solutions. In my daily work in schools, I have firsthand experience with the challenges and needs of students and staff and I bring that lens to the Board room to ensure we are delivering an equitable education that supports high expectations for all.

A little about Madeline…

I am the incumbent board member for the past two years and have lived in Prince George’s for the past 20 years. Thirteen of those years have been in Fort Washington, where I reside with my husband,  Retired Technical Sergeant Anthony Frazier Jr.  I am a college graduate with a master’s degree in clinical social work from the Silberman School of Social Work in New York City and have an Educational Leadership and Administration Specialist Degree from George Washington University.

I have a lifelong record of community service and have been actively involved in public schools as an educator for the past 20 years. My professional roles in schools have included serving as a social services director, child and family services program supervisor and manager, counselor, truancy specialist, school social worker, diversity, equity and inclusion coordinator, and alternative education programs coordinator. This experience informs the insight I bring to School Board discussions of current issues in our public schools that affect students, staff and families.

Qualifications

I have a strong commitment to education, a passion for serving my community, and thrive in the ability to work collaboratively with others. I understand educational policies, budgeting processes, and hold the needs of students and educators at the center of decision making. For twenty years I have led Latinas Leading Tomorrow a non-profit dedicated to leadership development and college access for girls in middle and high school which is nationally recognized by the White House as a Bright spot in Education. I am a practicing educator and clinical social worker with over 30 years of experience and hold a degree in Educational Leadership.

My Board Service and Accomplishments:

  • During my first year appointed to the Board seat, I rolled up my sleeves and quickly began to work as the vice-chair of the School Board’s budget committee to address the growing issue of teacher and bus driver shortages. To that end, I wrote a budget amendment to add a recruitment and retention officer to address the growing need for a diverse teacher and administrative workforce in our schools - one that reflects the student demographics.

  • Supported various amendments that included tutoring and translation services for important documents.

  • Supported a Transportation Audit for future planning.

  • Proposed more investments for additional counselors and social workers to address student substance abuse and mental health needs.

  • Voted to fund Literacy Hubs to address reading disparities.

  • Volunteered as a member of the Educational Equity Committee within the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE).

  • Currently, I serve on the Board’s academic achievement committee and the Latino Affairs Advisory Board for Prince George’s County.
  • Sponsored the Inaugural Prince Georges County Latino Education Summit at Oxon Hill. The summit allowed an opportunity for students, parents, elected officials, local college and university representatives, and many other education champions to come together.

  • Sponsored an Aviation and Engineering Exploration STEM. Event which provided an opportunity for students in 5, 6 and 7th grade to experience hands on activities about sustainability, engineering and aviation.

  • Partnered with community nonprofits to extend healthy farmers market in our two district 8 schools.

  • Assisted with parent engagement at Friendly High School.

  • Began a new tradition where  District 8 scholars are recognized at school board meetings for their leadership skills and accomplishments.

My Vision for District 8:

I want to ensure that every student has what they need to thrive and achieve their individual goals to be ready for life, college and career. Continuing as the District 8 School Board member is strategically aligned with my goals, which are outlined below:

I will continue to have a focus on community engagement and a commitment to elevating diverse voices and reducing misinformation. I will keep working to maintain a healthy and safe school environment, provide access to resources for social and emotional mental health care and continue to enhance School Board policies, equity outcomes for current initiatives and continued fiscal responsibility. I will continue to hold our superintendent accountable to the constant success of our scholars. I love District 8 and am deeply invested in ensuring our schools grow in success for all of our families and staff.

I will continue to promote academic excellence by supporting staff. I will focus on supporting efforts that tackle chronic absenteeism and I will continue to support the implementation and transparency of the academic data dashboards which will have a direct impact on academic improvement through transparency and accountability.

Advocate for increased awareness and education about mental health and substance abuse issues among students, families, teachers and staff. This could involve implementing comprehensive programs that incorporate mental health education into the curriculum, providing resources for teachers and staff on recognizing signs of mental health issues, and hosting workshops or events for parents on supporting their children's mental well-being. Ensure that all students have access to mental health services within the school setting, inclusive of virtual and in-person options and advocate for additional funding to support mental health initiatives in schools.

Every student deserves an equal opportunity to succeed. I will work to create a more inclusive and equitable learning environment by addressing disparities in resources, advocating for diverse perspectives in the curriculum and fostering a culture of respect and understanding. Our diversity data dashboard will serve as a great source for information.

I believe in the power of community involvement. As a School Board member, I will continue actively seek input from families, educators and community members to make informed decisions that reflect the needs and values of our community.

I understand the importance of fiscal responsibility. I will work diligently to allocate resources effectively, ensuring that our schools have the necessary tools and support while being mindful of taxpayers' investments.

Ensure we continue our focus as a board on a comprehensive plan for new school construction, renovation, and facility upgrades. Emphasize school infrastructure evaluations to make sure our buildings are safe for students to learn, and are warm, welcoming spaces where teachers can connect with students and teach.

Data show that families and staff have growing concerns around safety and security. Will continue working with the Board for continued investments around weapons abatement while monitoring the data for efficacy.

Ensuring safety in schools is more than just addressing weapon detection. It encompasses creating a nurturing environment with mental health support, anti-bullying programs, crisis management plans, and fostering positive relationships between students and staff. Promoting a culture of inclusivity, empathy, and respect can contribute significantly to a safer school environment.
